‘As you approach the horizon, O koel,
Kāñcī will shrink into view,
adorning the earth in its splendour
as though you were pulling at the earth’s dress
to reveal her rounded thighs
But don’t delay your departure,
mesmerised by her beauty.
For someone like you,
nothing is more important
than helping a friend in distress.
Verse 20 – Pūrva Bhāga
कोकिलसन्देशः – उद्दणडशास्त्री । The Message of the Koel – Uddanda Śāstrī
Sharp-eyed (-eared) readers will have noticed that this week’s verse of the week includes an audio version of the Sanskrit, recited by the multi-talented Shankar Rajaraman. Sanskrit poems were of course traditionally recited to an audience, not read silently in a book, and much of the effect of the poetry is lost without the sound. We are considering producing an audio version of the poem as a whole to accompany the book if you, our readers, enjoy listening to kavya as much as we do. So please send us your feedback on this verse and those to come.
The Message of the Koel will soon be available as a printed book and in eBook format. To book a copy in advance, please contact us or add a comment to this post.
